Yeah, popularity is what gets you on top. I mean especially in the prog section this is obvious. Your average drummer may not know Virgil, just because he doesn't appear on many huge-selling recordings, or play in bands that sell out stadiums (i.e. Planet X)

The frustrating part for me is that the hardest swingin' drummer on the planet will never make that list.

And when Jack Dejohnette doesn't make any of the jazz lists, well, the poll just looses credibility.

Keep in mind these polls are more about the magazine's readership than anything else.

In the days where I bought MD, there was a category called "Electric Jazz" (read: Fusion). I think they should reintroduce this category as all of this year's "Contemporary Jazz" winners would fit well (or better) in it (even ElNegro, just listen to his latest solo CD Italuba which is frighteningly good...).

Contemporary Jazz could then have space for that breed of real contemp of Blade, Hoenig, Hass & co.

The problem seems to be that the younger generation isn't hip to a lot of these cats. How many people on this message board actually voted? Just like politics, can't bitch if you don't vote...
Might have to grab a MD next year and contribute to the cause...hmmm?

It's just amusing when its far off the mark - like with the Weckl book or Portnoy for best Prog Rock drummer. Polls allow us to feel superior to the idiots who voted wrong!

It's becoming more painfully evident that the average young "musician" in this day & age has trouble understanding stylistic differences, or what a style is exactly. Also:
